Standard Chartered Marathon 2009 Race Pack

As a "lucky winner" of E-Ballot,I was able to collect my rack pack one week earlier compared to other runners.I can't go to Singapore just to collect a race pack so I asked my sister to do it for me.

My sister with my Bib and the race pack...and the ??lucky number.

Nothing much in the bag.The bag is of low quality and this year the vest is slightly bigger than the usual size.Runners have also started a Tee Swapping Thread in SGRunners website. These are the issues I managed to gather from on line discussion about this weekend SCSM 2009.

My XL SCSM vest...looks big.Never mind lah...too tired to complain.

Are You A Malaysian?

Got an email from a friend on how to identify a Malaysian...

What Makes A Malaysian A Malaysian?

1. A typical young Malaysian can name all the players from a top English Premier League club, but ask him to name one football player from Malaysia, he cannot!

2. When StreamyX come, you complain StreamyX too slow. When Maxis Broadband come, you complain Maxis Broadband always disconnects. When WiMax come, you complain Wimax too expensive. In the end, you say StreamyX still the best lah.

3. When highway toll price increase, you complain. When petrol price increase, you complain. When you go Starbucks buy RM10 coffee, NO COMPLAINTS.

4. When you cannot find parking in a shopping mall and have to walk very far, you complain. When you go inside the shopping mall and there's SALE , run from one end of 1Utama to the other,?that one?NO COMPLAINT.

5.. You are always late. And the excuse you give when you're late is always either: (a) traffic jam (b) no transport or (c) cannot find parking.

6. You have a parent who forces you to take science stream in high school, study engineering in Uni, then when you graduate, they ask you to forget everything you learnt in Uni and do commerce.

7. You know someone who can specially develop an angmoh accent when speaking to an American / British / Australian.

8. You complain against the government in kopitiam, you talk loud loud. Leave anonymous comments on blogs, you also talk loud loud. Attend ceremah by DAP, you shout loud loud. Then when Opposition organise a protest and ask you to go, you dun wan. Scared later kena tangkap by ISA.

9. Every year on the 30th April, you are one of the people below queuing up last minute to submit your tax return at the IRB.

10.. When you pay RM10 for something that costs RM1, you blame the Chinese.

11. When a government service is too slow, you blame the Malays.

12. When a building is not good and collapsed, you blame the Indians.

13. When a Chinese student won a scholarship, you say 'Wah! Very clever hor?' When a Malay student won a scholarship, you say 'Aiya! Of course lah! He Malay mah!'

14. When an angmoh stranger kisses you on the cheek to say hello, you very happy. When a Malaysian guy kisses you on the cheek to say hello, you slap him in face.

Post Penang Bridge Marathon

After a tiring race,my family and I headed to the newly open Hard Rock Hotel in Batu Ferringgi Penang.

The entrance of the hotel with the big guitar and the Hard Rock logo on top of the building. There were many guests waited to check in.My children couldn't wait for the room to be ready so they went to the pool immediately.

The children section of the pool with slides and water fountains.

The view from our room which is facing the sea and the swimming pool. Those staying at the ground level can jump into the pool from their balcony.

This hotel claimed to has the largest swimming pool in Penang.I like the design of the pool and its surrounding. My children wouldn't want to go back to the room after playing in the pool.

The room-nothing special except for pictures of rock stars hanging above the beds and also in the bathroom.

However pictures of the Beatles can be found everywhere in the hotel.Maybe only the older generation will know much of the Beatles.

The statues of the four members of the Beatles at the entrance of the hotel.I am sure my friend Chee Yee will like this as he is a fan of Beatles.

Again...the Beatles!!

After a hectic day of playing in the pool, shopping, eating out in Gurney Drive, we hit the bed at 10.30pm.The next morning we had breakfast in the hotel before going to Penang National Park which is about 4km from the hotel.

The entrance of Penang National Park.Entrance is free but one needs to register at the counter.

My son and me trying our luck fishing...

Overall our Penang trip was fun and enjoyable.A quality time spent with the family. We started our journey home in the afternoon and reached Seremban at 10.00pm.Everyone was tired but happy.
My next trip will be to Singapore for the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon on 5th December and a cruise with my family to Phuket immediately after the marathon.

Penang Bridge Marathon 2009

Penang Bridge International Marathon 2009

Sunday 22 November 2009

Queensbay Mall

I started my journey from Seremban on Saturday 21 November at 6.00am together with my family. The kids were very excited and looking forward to this trip. The journey was smooth and uneventful with few stops along the highway for toilet break.

My youngest child was having fever the night before our trip.I applied a cooling gel on her forehead during the trip as an extra precaution.I don't want the fever to disturb my running plan.

Finally reached Penang at 11.00am and at the Penang Bridge,I can see a big Penang Marathon banner hanging across the toll plaza. There were notices informing the public of bridge closure from 2.00am until the late morning.

While crossing the bridge I noticed the gradient of the road was not so steep as I earlier thought. The distance from flat end of the road leading to the peak of pinnacles was about 1.5km.I was confident I can run the whole portion of the bridge.

After the bridge,we turned left towards Queensbay Mall and Eastin Hotel. We were staying in this new hotel which I found it to be slightly below par in term of service. The checking in and out were slow. The rooms were smaller and pre- booking request was not fulfilled.

While waiting for the rooms to be ready,we went to the marathon site to exchange my running vest. They did not have XXL size so they offered me a L size singlet which was slightly bigger than my XL vest. Both were from Brooks with different sizes and measurement:a L size Brooks singlet can be slightly bigger than a XL Brooks vest!!??

After checking into Eastin,my family went out for shopping while I rested in the room. They were out until 10.00pm!!

I managed to get some sleep before walking to the starting point at 1:45am.There I met up with Eric and Yee who were staying in Tune Hotel. There were many familiar faces like Frank,Choi,Jeff,Loke and my former university mate:Tham who was running his first marathon.

The attention was at this group of "elite runners"from Kenya.Since they were the best, they were invited to start from the front. They were very fast. They sprint all the way for 42km and it looked so easy for them.

Before the start:a lion dance performance after the arrival of Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.I like this, something special and different from other marathons.

The full marathoners were flagged off at 2.30am.The first portion took us towards Seagate before making a U turn heading to the bridge. Then it was all the way running on the bridge from the island towards the mainland before another U turn near the toll plaza heading back to the island.
After the bridge we ran towards E-Gate before making a U turn back to Queensbay Mall.I was running at my own comfortable pace throughout the race except on the returning portion from E-Gate where I tried to run a bit faster to catch up.Then I started to developed muscle stiffness over my right quadricep.I applied some ointment and continued to run hoping to get a better timing compared to my last Std.Chartered KL Marathon.

Somehow I did not managed to achieve a better timing.I finished the race with a time of 4h 53 min which was about 5 minutes slower compared to my previous marathon despite not stopping or walking throughout the race.So what went wrong??

This picture taken by my wife while waiting for me at the finishing line. She was there earlier waiting to snap pictures of me crossing the finishing line. The time shown was 4h 40min and after waiting for 5 minutes my family decided to go around looking for me because they thought I couldn't be so slow. They were wrong..I came in later and they missed taking pictures of me.

But she managed to snap picture of a runner collapsing near the finishing line. Not easy to run ah?

My family found me sitting under the big tent, looking very tired and speechless.I was having "stomach cramp"-a sensation of epigastric discomfort with nausea feeling. My children were staring at me wondering what has happened to me.They were curious and my daughter asked if I got number one position!!?Ha..ha..ha...

We walked back to the hotel where I took a bath and we went for breakfast which were provided by the hotel.By then I was feeling much better. We took a quick breakfast because we were rushing off hoping to get a bigger prize from Penang Bridge Marathon organiser.

On our way back to the marathon site,we saw many fun runners...or walkers coming in.I think majority of the participants are school children taking part in the fun runs or 10 km run.

Reached the marathon site just in time for the lucky draw. There were many prizes including free hotel stays, a motorcycle and a car for lucky runners.I jokingly told my children that Papa will be the biggest winner of all, better than the Kenyans if I could win the grand prize of a new Proton Saga in the lucky draw.However...I did not win any prize.

Group picture:Charles,Lim and Tham(L to R).Tham,my former university mate was running his first marathon and he did very well with a time of 4h 43min.
PBIM....the good points:
1)weather was sea breeze and cooling air.
2)plenty of water for runners to the extend of wasting.
3)drummers at the peak end of the bridge...COOL!!
PBIM...the bad points:
1)no consistent distance markers
2)available few distance markers were not correct. The 35km marker was supposed to be 33km according to Terence's GPS.
3)no signs showing distance to the next water station.
4)unable to tell which station has water or 100 Plus.
5) final official timing did not gave us the split timing.

Overall...PBIM organiser did a good job. There are rooms for improvement next year and I am sure to return for the 2010 edition.
However I am disappointed with my race results and performance.

Sickening...The Great Pretender

The politics scenario in Malaysia is sickening...the tussle for power.....power crazy!!

Enemy and "friends" again....they are good actors.Nomination for the Oscar awards.

Oh yes, I'm the great pretender
Pretending I'm doing well
My need is such I pretend too much
I'm lonely but no one can tell

The tears of fear...fear of losing power, position and glory.

Oh yes, I'm the great pretender
Adrift in a world of my own
I play the game but to my real shame
You've left me to dream all alone
Too real is this feeling of make-believe
Too real when I feel what my heart can't conceal

An Evening at Sino English School, Seremban

Attended my children school prize giving ceremony yesterday for the first time.Usually I don't like to attend this type of function because I can't understand Mandarin and it always take a lot of time with multiple speeches by so and so.

As usually, the event started with the headmistress,PIBG chairman, special VIP guests etc.Lucky they started the event on time as the VIP was very punctual. The speeches were short, about 5 minutes per speech.Very good!!

After the prize giving ceremony,it was showtime...performance by students. There were 20 performances!!By the 5th performance,I was out from the hall and I was heading home after the 10th performance. It was almost 10.00pm then. The school shouldn't have schedule too many performances since many parents will not stay back until the end of the event unless their own child was performing.

Today's children are very talented. They can sing, dance and act!!They are so lucky compared to myself.I can't sing, dance or act and has never been chosen to perform during my entire school going years.I was not even qualified to receive any awards during those year end prize giving ceremony.Why??...because my parents has never pressured or monitored closely my studies and activities.I was able to do whatever I wished.

But today's parents are different.Kiasu parents crowded to the front to have a better view of their children and also to take photos. They do not understand that their selfish behaviour were blocking the view of other parents sitting at the back of the hall.

The Standard 6 pupils singing the "graduation song".Children today are very lucky. They are bigger in size , more intelligent and talented compared to those during my school time.

My son aka the "angry warrior".He was angry because the teachers wanted him to put on make up for his performance. He said "warrior don't use make up,only girls use make up!!"

My children performing the Orang Ulu dance.

Happy faces at the end of the dance...what a relieve!!I am sure the children were having stage fright and performance anxiety.Even we as parents also felt the stress when they were performing in front of a large audience.

PBIM Race Pack

Finally after waited for almost a week,I received this package from PBIM yesterday.

As usual it contained few samples from the marathon sponsors and a small bag with Digi logo on it.Nothing much in the marathon runners' guide book .
The biggest disappointment is the vest. The size is smaller than the usual XL size which I used to wear.I think this is due to the manufacturer sizing and the same problem happened to me when I was provided with Adidas running vest during Sundown and Shah Alam KOTR race.
Hopefully I can exchange it with a larger size...XXL??before PBIM.The organiser will try their best to help after I posted my problem on their Facebook site.It will be a waste if I can exchange it since I like the colour and the material of the vest.

Test your Knowledge.

Found this questionnaire in an Australian medical journal. It is interesting to test our knowledge on common issues.

The extract from the journal:

As a rough guide to health knowledge in the community, a number of true/false statements on issues related to body weight management were given to two opportunistic samples attending health education sessions during 2008:

1. Sit ups will not help reduce fat off the waist

2. Exercise is better than dieting for weight loss

3. Swimming is better than walking for weight loss

4. Weight lifting is good for fat loss

5. The best measure of body fat is body mass index

6. You lose more weight doing exercise you are good at

7. An obese person can be fit and healthy

8. You have to ‘bust a gut’ to lose a gut

9. Sauna baths are good for fat loss

10. Exercise can increase depression

1. Fruit juice is about as fattening as beer

2. Humans need 8 glasses of water a day

3. Peanuts are a healthy food

4. Dairy products can help weight loss

5. A low protein diet is best for weight loss

6. Fat people don’t get more hungry than lean people

7. Chocolate is healthy provided it is ‘dark’

8. Spicy foods make you eat more

9. Vegetable juice is healthier than fruit juice

10. Coffee causes cancer

Time Is Running Out

Forced myself to wake up at 5.00am today for my morning run.I has been feeling tired for past 1 week and also lazy.Wun and gang planned to do some hill training near my house. They asked me to join them and I agreed.

I started my run around my housing area at 5.50am while waiting for the rest to arrive.
Managed to do about 5km when Wun,Lau,Steve and Francis came. Then I decided not to join them but instead to finish my target 18km run.The hill near my house was a very steep and I afraid it will over exhaust myself especially during this tapering period.

They did 5 times of hill repeats while I managed to complete my run at 8.00am.

Looking back at my training programme set by Yee about 3 months ago,I think it is a big failure since I did not follow what was written for me.Yee set a very easy training schedule with alternate day run of 7km,10km and 10km.Long run at alternate week. However I only managed to do about twice 10km run per week and alternate week of long runs.My highest week mileage was only 50+km while Yee mileage was 70+km and Eric was 80+km.

Seems like I did the least training for my upcoming Penang and Singapore Marathon compared to how I trained for my first marathon-The Sundown Marathon. It is too late now to do anything.Just relax during this tapering period and hope for the best.

My New Gadget

Thanks to fellow runner who is currently based in Shanghai,China and he occasionally joins us for run when he comes back to Malaysia.

Last Sunday he joined us for the 39km final long run before PBIM.He brought along this hydration belt which he sourced from China.Almost everyone from our group get a new set of this hydration belt.

We used to have the Pacesetter hydration belt which fits only one bottle. Now with this new gadget,it can fits in 2 bottles.I am wearing this for my coming Penang and Singapore Marathon as I can't trust the organiser to be 100% efficient in providing water to all runners.I also can store up my Powergel etc in the side pockets of this belt.
