Adidas Sundown Marathon 2009

Sundown I come.Since the date line for early bird registration is coming to the end,I decided to commit myself to run my first marathon by registering online. This marathon may be tough for a newbie like me for few reasons:

1)Run starts at midnight and ends early in the morning. So one have to forget about sleeping.I am the kind of person who needs much sleep in order to perform well and for many years I have not try skipping sleep even for a night.I think running at the odd hour will definitely affect one's performance.

2)Running in the dark.I read through some blogs on last year Sundown Marathon where runners described some part of the route was quite dark. The rest of the route was lit by some street light.I guess runners have to be careful running in dimly lit route to avoid injuries. So this will definitely affect the speed which we will run.

3)Running for a full 42km itself is a great challenge to me as I have never do it before in my whole life. The distance is quite frightening. That is why I have full respect to those taking part in the ultra marathon category where they need to run for 84km!!

I have paid my registration on line and have even booked my flight to Singapore but have not book my hotel room. This time I am going alone and I decided to make it a 24hours trip.I will not bring my family for holidays in Singapore even it is the beginning of school holidays as I plan to bring them later in December.

So far none of the Seremban runners are keen to join in this marathon probably due to the high cost involved.I estimated it cost me about RM1300 to join this race.

-Flight both ways by Airasia:RM200

-Registration fee:SD60(early bird price)

-Hotel room:SD200(staying at the official hotel as it is nearby the marathon venue)

-Transportation from Singapore airport to hotel, two ways:SD30(approx.only)

-Transportation from Seremban to LCCT,two ways:RM160

-Food/drinks/other expenses in Singapore:SD100(approx.only)

*assuming exchange rate SD1:RM2.40

However I will give this marathon a try as I think it is a unique race:it is a night race and the only one in this part of the world.Something special and we are helping to boast Singapore economy!ha..ha...ha...

*The route as shown on the website.

Testing Adidas Adistar Salvation

I used the Adistar Salvation for the first time yesterday for a short 7km run and again today for a slightly longer 10km run. This is what I think after two short run:
-I can feel the comfort of the inner lining of this shoe compared to other shoe that I have.

-Good cushioning and support on my heel.I don't feel much impact compared to my Mizuno shoe.

Well, I think so far I feel good running in this shoe.I need to run for a longer distance before I can make a better judgement on this shoe.I doubt this shoe will disappoint me.

Adidas Adistar Salvation

I took the afternoon off from work to see Mr.Krishnan in his office in Plaza Damansara. The journey from Seremban took me almost 2 hours because of the lunch break traffic jam and I got lost in the Sri Hartamas area. Finally I managed to locate Plaza Damansara and I took the lift up to the 4th floor of Block B to the Adidas office.I met with Mr.Krishnan and he introduced to me the Adidas Adistar Salvation running shoe.He explained in detail the different features available on the shoe and its functions.

I am impressed with the technology involved in making a shoe.I have never bothered to read more on shoes as I usually buy a pair of shoe based on the pricing, the outer appearance and recommendation from friends. This Adistar Salvation looks beautifully bright with striking colours on the sole.

Information on Adidas Adistar Salvation:

The adiSTAR® Salvation running shoe its all about FORMOTION™ control, adiPRENE®+ propulsion and a swift, anatomical fit for the kind of comfort that goes beyond going the distance.

It is an imported premium control shoe with light seam free design with ground adapting FORMOTION for smoothest and comfortable run.It weighs 12.3 oz.The retail price is about RM530.

FORMOTION™ (the two round shape on the sole of the shoe)adapts to the ground to ensure the smoothest, most comfortable run possible.Sport is not two-dimensional. Your apparel shouldn't be either. The radical new cuts and three-dimensional engineering of ForMotion™ create shaped garments that follow the curves of the body and mimic the motions of sport for better fit, greater comfort and amplified freedom of movement.

Air mesh upper for maximum ventilation; NoSeam(meaning no thread) in the upper provides a sock-like fit without irritating seams;

adiPRENE®+ in the forefoot maintains propulsion and efficiency.

A fitFOAM™ midsole, made of a visco-elastic rebound foam, contours to your foot like a custom mold; Pro-moderator medial support device prevents overpronation;

adiPRENE® under the heel for superior cushioning at impact. For over 10 years, adidas has continually refined the cushioning properties and durability of adiPRENE® to provide an exceptional impact-absorbing material for the heel. An adiPRENE® insert provides both long-term cushioning and comfort.

adiWEAR® (the black colour rubber on the sole)out sole offers the ultimate in high-wear durability. An extremely durable, non-marking rubber used primarily for tennis shoe out soles and for other high-abrasion applications which offers the optimal balance of excellent abrasion resistance, traction and flexibility. In linear sports (such as running or golf), adiWEAR® is used to reduce wear in the heel landing area and the toe-off area. In court sports (such as tennis), it offers durability while still allowing pivoting and sliding.

GeoFit® is an internal footwear technology that enhances fit and comfort by placing padding where you need it. The result? Greater stability, more effective distribution of pressure, a higher level of protection, and better heel fit and functional location.

I spent about half an hour with Mr.Krishnan before I took the shoe home for further use and testing.I have not try running in the new shoe yet and I intend to do this on Sunday. So far I am happy with the design and appearance of this shoe.I would like to thank Adidas Malaysia and especially to Mr.Krishnan for this "Chinese New Year ang pow".

Obama-First Black American President

Inauguration Day:
Barack Obama, joined by his wife Michelle, takes the oath of office from Chief Justice John Roberts to become the 44th president of the United States at the US Capitol in Washington.

Part of Obama's speech which I find inspiring:

" On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord."

"On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics."

" With old friends and former foes, we will work tirelessly to lessen the nuclear threat, and roll back the specter of a warming planet. We will not apologize for our way of life, nor will we waver in its defense, and for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you."

"To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds. And to those nations like ours that enjoy relative plenty, we say we can no longer afford indifference to the suffering outside our borders; nor can we consume the world's resources without regard to effect. For the world has changed, and we must change with it."

"This is the meaning of our liberty and our creed — why men and women and children of every race and every faith can join in celebration across this magnificent Mall, and why a man whose father less than sixty years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath"

Indeed, this is a happy occasion for the race who has been subjected to discrimination for many years.

GE30km Run-Group Results

While the Seremban group was running and struggling to overcome the hilly route in the Great Eastern 30KM run,I was also struggling to keep awake in a "marathon" lecture from 9.00am until 5.30pm in Open University City Campus on the same Sunday.

I managed to speak to Yee on the phone during my lunch break. He was satisfied with his timing. The unofficial results of the group based on their own stopwatch:

1)Eric:2h 52m

2)Yee:2h52m+few seconds

3)Heng:3h 08m

4)Hong Pak:4h 30m

5)Choo:2h 05m(20km run)

6)Teh:2h 30m(20km run)-this timing needs to re confirm with Teh personally.

The ones who registered but did not turn up:

1)Yong(30km):sprained and injured his left wrist few days before the run.His wrist was heavily bandaged with traditional herbs!

2)Yin:busy with her business??(pre-CNY)

Group photo of my class with the lecturers. The students from this group come from all over Malaysia even from Tawau,Sabah and Kuching,Sarawak. We will be together for the next 2 years and maybe only few will proceed to the tougher part which will take another 2 years or more.

Majlis Perbandaran Nilai Ruling Against Dogs.

Pet lovers especially dog owners are sure to get "fired up"by the latest ruling by our not so intelligent municipal councillors from Majlis Perbandaran Nilai(MPN) .This news appeared in The Star:

SEREMBAN: Dog owners in Nilai must now get written permission from their neighbours to keep the animals in their homes.
This is the first time such a ruling has been introduced in Negri Sembilan following recent amendments to the Dog Licensing Bylaws 2008. The municipal council issues annual dog licences at RM20 each.
Council president Datuk Abd Halim Abd Latif said the ruling covers dogs which were three months old and above.
“For those who want to rear more than two dogs, their premises must be at least 1,000 sq metres.
“You are allowed to keep more than four dogs if the area is larger than 1,000 sq metres,” he said.
The affected areas are Nilai, Rasah, Ampangan, Mantin, Lenggeng, Pantai, Rantau, Labu and Senawang.
Abd Halim said the owners were duty-bound to ensure that their pets were not a nuisance to their neighbours such as the animals defecating in public places.
“The pets cannot be allowed to roam freely outside their compound,” he said, adding that officers would take away unlicensed pets.
Those caught without a licence could be fined up to RM1,000 or jailed not more than six months, or both.
The Seremban Municipal Council issues dog licences for RM10 each but has not asked owners to get their neighbours’ permission. Applicants are required to attach a vaccination card for their pets.
The state Veterinary Services Department issues licences for RM5 for those living in other areas.
Resident Melissa Wong asked why was there a need to get her neighbour’s permission to keep a dog.
“My neighbour’s cats defecate in my compound almost every day. Why doesn’t the council make it a requirement for cat owners to get their neighbour’s consent?” she asked.
P. Manimaran, who lives in Rasah Kemayan, said he may have to give up his dog because he was not on talking terms with his neighbour.
Those with queries can call the Nilai Municipal Council at 06-798 9099/9077

The first question which come to one's mind is why the authorities always target dogs??Majlis Perbandaran Nilai must be fair to all because other animals also roam freely and defecate in public places. Some people have their cats, chicken, ducks, goats and cows roam freely. You will be surprised to see all these animals in the rural areas and kampungs in Negeri Sembilan.

Why no laws against them?Is this because dogs are considered "haram" to them?or they are afraid of dogs?Dogs will not bite unless provoked. If you have dogs you will know that the neighbourhood kids frequently like to disturb dogs when they pass by your house. These kids will throw stones at the dogs and if one day the dogs bite one of the kids,it will create a big news in the media. As usual, our biased media will only portray the suffering of the kid and accused the dog owner of negligent.Do parents ever teach their children to love animals?do they teach their children not to kill or disturb any animals?Do parents know where their children are everyday or who are they mixing with?I noticed a lot of parents couldn't be bothered!!

It is a very stupid law requiring pet owners begging for neighbours permission in order to keep dogs.If your neighbours ask for your permission to rear dogs, will you refused to sign?If you refused,I am sure your neighbours will not be happy with you. This will create unnecessary tension among neighbours especially among Muslim and non-Muslim.Well done!!This is what the government wants! We have created hatred and disunity among different races in this country.I always think politicians are to be blamed for causing disunity in this country with their racial based policies.

There are many comments on this issue in the media/Internet and I have listed few of them here:

I agree with you that all animals too must be treated the same way as dogs, i.e. permission to keep any form of animal must also get the neighbour's permission! If not this is discrimination!I also agree that cats are greater nuisance as they can climb and so get into the house of others easier. Secondly, their feces are more smelly! Like dogs, they also bear diseases! If I am a Nilai resident, I would take the Local Council to court, as it is a form of discrimination and also infringes on our human rights to breed an animal that is commonly regarded universally as a domesticated pet and friendly to humans! Don't let religion cloud your judgement and sense of fairness to all people!
By victorchew46, 15-Jan-2009

I'm not a cat hater, and have owned cats before a long time ago. and i do agree that laws regarding pets, is always skewed against dogs.where i currently live, i am also suffering from the large cat population that runs around freely. They try to get at rubbish in the bins, even entering my house, worst of all, my car gets scratched from cats climbing on top of it.all pet owners must be responsible irregardless of what type of pet they have. there should be no double standards.
By gary73, 15-Jan-2009

Every time a ruling is made for dog-owners, the authority refrain from explaining why similar rules are not meted out to other animals as well...for example cats. Not a word mentioned about rulings on cats. The word cats didn't even appear. Never. One wonders why.....hmm????
By chio_meng, 15-Jan-2009

Please don't let religion cloud your mind. Just because you can't touch dogs, you don't want any dogs near you right? Thus, you impose a rule on other dog owners to seek consent from their neighbours? Please justify this "rule" to the the people of Nilai. They deserve to live freely and comfortably. Do you know dogs are men best friends? They would protect you and serve you with loyalty. If you are in trouble, will your cat come to your rescue?
By candygurl81, 15-Jan-2009

My suggestions are:
1)Fine and take action against animal owners if their animals (cats, goats, chicken, ducks and cows included)are found roaming free and defecate in public places.

2)Vaccination is a must to prevent spreading of disease and it is a must before issuing a licence. This must be applied to cats as they also spread diseases and parasites.

3)Abolish the law which require neighbours permission as not to create uneasiness, hatred and tensions among neighbours.

4)Proper enforcement to look out for irresponsible animal owners.

5)Educate pet owners of their responsibility.

What am I going to do?

1)Call my area ADUN:to tell him that many are not happy with this ruling.I want him to ask MPN to review this new ruling.

2)Call the MPN councilors(from MIC and PPP) who are representing my area,Rasah Kemayan:

Encik Ganesan a/l Marimuthu and Encik Ganesan a/l K.Arumugam.

I want to hear their explanations and their stand on this issue.

Lastly,I am very disappointed with MPN for introducing this ruling against dogs only.

Israel-Palestine Conflict:The People Suffered

Nobody likes war.For the past 10 days the media have been busy publishing news and pictures of Israel attacking Hamas militants in Gaza.If you noticed, there are plenty of news in our media portraying the suffering of the Palestinian and the brutality of the Israel but there are no news giving Israel side of story on why this war happen. This is a bias reporting by our media which is control by the government in order to brain wash our people to hate the Jewish and Israel.

If one is to think rationally and see the whole picture without bias and without acting irrationally like cavemen,I think problems can be solved.Rationally thinking person will not behave and speak like a caveman.Good leaders will not asked the people to stop working with American companies in this current bad economy situation. How are these people going to feed their family?Go hunting and gather foods in the jungle? This is typical of a caveman lifestyle!!

In order to hear the other side of story,we need to search for news from Internet which are less bias compared to our local medias. This is what I found.Answer to common questions asked in this conflict.

Why more Palestinians died?

The reason that Israel suffers less casualties is because it has a superior army, and has spent millions of dollars on civil defense infrastructure (neighborhood bomb shelters, reinforced concrete playgrounds for children, etc.).

Also, Israeli hospitals are well-equipped to handle the wounded. Not just Jews, but Gazans, too! In Ashkelon's Barzilai Hospital, "dozens of Gaza Arabs are being treated... at the same time terrorists are bombarding the city." ("Israeli Hospital Cares for Sick and Injured Gaza Arabs," by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu, Israel National News, December 29, 2008)

By contrast, in the Gaza hospitals, "armed Hamas militants in civilian clothes roamed the halls" where they shot and killed other Palestinians. ("No Early End Seen to 'All-Out War' on Hamas in Gaza," by Ethan Bronner and Taghreed El-Khodary, New York Times, December 29, 2008)

Shockingly, Hamas is not even allowing wounded Palestinians access to medical treatment. "We are waiting for the wounded Palestinians to cross. They are not being allowed to cross," Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit told reporters. Asked who was to blame, he said: "Ask the party in control on the ground in Gaza." ("Egypt: Hamas denying Gaza wounded treatment in Egypt," by Alaa Shahine, Reuters, December 28, 2008)

It is absurd to assign the "moral high-ground" to he who suffers the most causalities. By this yardstick, during World War Two the Axis forces would be considered the "victims" against the Allied "aggressors."

Why is Israel bombing Gaza when innocent civilians are being killed?

Israel never targets civilians. The death of innocent civilians is regrettable under any circumstances and every effort is made to avoid civilian casualties. That imperative must be balanced with the need to protect Israeli civilians, who suffer from ongoing attacks from Gaza.

But while the Palestinians fire Kassam rockets indiscriminately into Israeli territory, Israel launches pinpoint strikes at Hamas infrastructure. Prior to launching any large-scale attacks, Israel spent many months identifying Hamas' strongholds and training facilities. The Israeli Air Force also managed to hit "secret" targets such as underground missile launchers and arms caches -- a testament to Israel's great effort to ensure that air strikes weaken Hamas without harming innocent Palestinians.

Israel does not want a humanitarian crisis, and Hamas is the cause of the suffering and distress of the population there.
Unfortunately, Hamas has never shown the same level of concern for either Israeli or Palestinian civilians. On one hand, Hamas has fired thousands of missiles into Israeli territory, killing and wounding hundreds.

On the other hand, rather than seeking the well-being of the Palestinians under its control in Gaza, Hamas has exploited its civilian population -- and Israel's reluctance to cause civilian casualties -- by placing non-combatants in and around areas likely to be targeted by Israel.

Hamas brings women and children up to the roofs of buildings housing terrorist activity in an attempt to prevent air strikes; it sends civilians to the line of fire; it works out of schools and mosques; it fires rockets out of crowded population centers; and it sends Palestinian mothers to murder Israeli children in suicide attacks.

In addition, many of Hamas' arms smuggling tunnels are hidden beneath the homes of Palestinian civilians.

This cynical use of human shields is illegal under international law and the cause of many needless Palestinian deaths. Therefore, the responsibility for Palestinian civilian casualties lies with Hamas, not Israel.

Look at how Hamas used innocent children as human shield:

Isn't Israel's operation a violation of the Hamas truce?

Hamas is responsible for the situation, since it violated the calm, is firing against and attacking Israeli citizens, and is investing all its resources in arming itself and gathering power.
The truce brokered by Egypt was exploited by Hamas not only to employ terror against Israel's citizens, but also to gain strength and massively arm itself with the intention of increasing their capacity for terror and expanding the range of the threat against Israeli citizens. Hamas men were being smuggled out and were being trained in Iran and Syria.

Hamas shoots harmless, homemade rockets, and Israel responds with fighter jets and precision-guided missiles. Isn't that excessive force?

The Palestinians have long cultivated an image of victim hood to win world sympathy and demand Israeli restraint in the face of Palestinian aggression. In reality, the Palestinians' so-called "primitive" Kassam rocket has killed and wounded hundreds of Israeli civilians. The number of casualties would be even higher without Israeli security measures such as early-warning alarms in areas under rocket threat that allow Israelis to escape into bomb shelters. Hamas has also fired medium-range Grad-type Katyusha rockets, placing more than 250,000 Israeli civilians under direct threat of rocket fire.

Given the Palestinian fire power and their willingness to use it, it is clear that the charge of "excessive force" is simply the latest incarnation of the Palestinian strategy of "victim hood." Terror groups fire indiscriminately at innocent Israelis and then complain of excessive or disproportionate force when Israel fires back. But according to internationally accepted laws of war, Israel is permitted to respond with the force necessary to end the conflict.

It is also important to examine the intent behind the use of weapons. Palestinian terrorists do everything in their power to hurt or kill as many Israeli civilians as possible; Israel is using its advanced weaponry to protect Palestinian civilians from harm.

Isn't Hamas entitled to defend its territory against Israeli occupation?

Israel withdrew completely from the Gaza Strip in 2005, uprooting thousands of its own citizens in order to uphold internationally-recognized borders in Gaza. The Palestinians have no further territorial claims against Israel in Gaza. But instead of working to improve the quality of life for its citizens, Hamas has focused on improving the range and accuracy of its Kassam missiles and mortars and increasing its store of weapons. The Palestinian rockets, therefore, can only be seen as aggression against Israel with no moral basis.

Palestinians have fired more than 6,000 rockets and mortars into Israel since the Israeli withdrawal -- all without provocation. The rocket fire even continued during the six-months of "calm" in the Gaza area that ended last Friday. Since then, Hamas stepped up rocket fire substantially, launching 170 rockets at Israel over eight days, an average of more than 20 rockets a day.

No country in the world would allow this type of onslaught against its citizens. As President-elect Barack Obama said during his visit to the rocket-battered town of Sderot five months ago, "If someone was sending rockets into my house where my two daughters sleep at night, I would do everything to stop that, and would expect Israel to do the same thing

Isn't Hamas the democratically-elected government in Gaza? Why is Israel trying to overthrow it?

Hamas promotes itself as the legitimate power in Gaza. In reality, Hamas is at its core a terrorist organization that refuses to renounce violence or recognize Israel's right to exist. Hamas is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.

Hamas came to power in Gaza through a violent coup against the Palestinian Authority government. The international community continues to recognize the PA, under the leadership of Mahmoud Abbas, as the legitimate Palestinian government in the Palestinian territories. At the same time Israel is fighting terror, the government is deliberately and openly maintaining a political process with the Palestinian government Abbas.
Hamas opposes these negotiations and any settlement with Israel, and constitutes an unstable element in the region.
Hamas steadfastly refuses to recognize Israel and continues to launch attacks on its neighbor. Since Hamas refuses to live in peace with Israel, the Israeli government has no choice but to seek Hamas' replacement.

As you can see,in any conflict there are two sides of the story to be told.If a person is too bias on listening to one side then he will act irrationally. One has to be calm and assess the situation before calling for boycott or quiting of a job. This is too emotional kind of action. The feeling of anger will go off in no time and everyone will forget what had happened until another episode of conflict arise. Then our emotionally unbalanced leaders will start making unnecessary comments.Who will be in the losing end?It is the people! The conflict in middle east will not end as they have been fighting since biblical times. Both groups are stubborn. The one who suffers is the people. The conflict will not end until one side is totally eliminated from the surface of this earth because they refused to sit and negotiate.

Training Log

One of the things I need to improve on this year is keeping my running log up to date.I tried maintaining an online training log last year but it didn't worked out after only one month.I always forgot to update it after a training session and after a few days I totally forgot how much I have trained earlier. So for this year I will use a diary as a training log to keep a log of my training sessions. The training log will let me see just how far I have come since starting my goal of finishing a marathon. This will keep me motivated as I can see the progress during my training preparation.

The training log will include the date, distance and how long it took me to complete my training session. That way when I look over my training log I can see how far I have come since starting out on wanting to run a marathon.Yee,my running partner also keep a more detail training log for many years. He also included a column in his training log where he can enter comments about his training session such as the weather conditions, the terrain, how he felt and thoughts about how he could improve your sessions.

Doing this allows me to track my progress. The other common mistake most beginners like me make is not to fill our training log out as soon as we finish our session and instead putting it off for later. Then the training log starts to develop holes and the point of keeping a log dwindles.

My training log which I started since 1st January 2009 shown that I have done a total of 71km to date which included long runs, hill training, speed training and tempo run.

Other stuffs which can be included:

1)Setting short term goals:Use the training log to set weekly goals.
2)Setting long term goals:date of the next marathon or losing weight.
3)Log shoe mileage:Mark the date when you began running in the current shoes and keep a running tally of mileage.
4)Keeping tabs on aches and pains.

Therefore, please make sure we remember to fill out our training log straight after finishing our training session!

I can't help feeling sorry for our fellow Malaysian students after reading this news today:

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 8 (Bernama) -- University students and their institutions can organise and participate in protests against the Israeli invasion of Palestine, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said today. He said the ministry had no objection to the students and universities staging such a protest as the amended Universities and University Colleges Act allowed it."I believe students can be involved in mass demonstrations like that. The amendment to the Act allows the students to participate in such activities, so there will be no problem for them to make their stand," he said after launching the "Malaysia Future Leadership" programme organised by the CIMB Group and The Wall Street Journal Asia at Universiti Malaya, here.Mohamed Khaled said it was not necessary for the students to get a permit for the demonstrations but they had to inform the university of their activities for safety reasons."Right now, we see protests here and there. Maybe they can participate in a national demonstration like that of the Malaysian Peace Movement or something like that organised by Umno Youth. I think they can participate in that. There is no need to take part in demonstrations daily here and there," he added.

Students are not allow to take part in politics and demonstrations as stated by the University Act or risk of being sacked from the university:BUT now government allow them to take part in mass demonstration.

This statement was made by a minister at the launching of "Malaysia Future Leadership":I wonder the quality and the mentality of our current leaders and what type of future leaders can we produce from our education systems.

No permit required:since when is the authority being so democratic and liberal??

A national demonstration like those organised by UMNO youth:To me,they behave and look more like hooligans.

If you will to assess these statements, the only word I can find to fit them perfectly is

What is hypocrite? It is define as:

-a person who pretends to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc., that he or she does not actually possess, esp. a person whose actions belie stated beliefs.

-a person who feigns some desirable or publicly approved attitude, esp. one whose private life, opinions, or statements belie his or her public statements.

If you can remember few weeks ago,our former Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has written an open letter to incoming US President Barack Obama, asking him to abandon his caveman attitude. To me,this caveman attitude can be seen here in our "Bolehland".The idea of getting a big mass of people out on the street making noises and creating short cheap publicity is a typical behaviour of cavemen.During the time when dinosaurs ruled the earth, these cavemen will gathered in mass to show their strength against perceived threats by making loud noises to chase away animals or dinosaurs.Look how similar is the behaviour then and at present time.

It is very sad to see the behaviour of current leaders barking on the wrong trees and getting their priorities wrong when there are multiple other more important issues affecting this country.Soon we will see ourselves going backward in time with this cavemen mentality while others progress.

Sad..very sad.

May God bless this country!!

GE 30KM-A Set Back

It has been a productive long holidays week for me in term of running.I did the most total mileage for a week, from Sunday 28/12/2008 to last Sunday 4/1/2009.I did a total of 75km .Last Sunday I did my first 30km run with Yee,Heng and Hong Pak.They are preparing for their Great Eastern 30km(GE 30KM) race in 2 weeks time.I joined them to test my ability to run more than 25km(the furthest I ran until last Sunday).I had planned to take part in GE30KM about one month ago but now I have to cancel my plan. Why??

The reason is I am going back to school again.I have enrolled in a post graduate programme to improve on my knowledge and as a personal challenge for self improvement. This programme requires me to attend a few weekend classes in a year in Kuala Lumpur.

The coordinator of the programme informed me earlier that the orientation is going to be in January but they have not fixed the date yet.I received an e-mail today requiring me to attend the orientation on 17th and 18th of this month.Initially I got the idea of "ponteng"(skip) class for the half day on Sunday for the run then quickly clean up and proceed to class. The e-mail stated that attendance is compulsory and they will check on the participants attendance.Since this class has not many participants,I think I will be easily noticed if I will to sneak in half way through the discussions. As not to give a bad impression,I decided to give up on this run. This is the first setback to my running resolutions as I intended to use the GE 30km race to gauge my ability to run long distance before my first marathon.

I began to worry if my future weekend classes will clash with my 4 major marathons date.I hope not.

Jeremiah 29:11 (New International Version)
11 For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

My RTG and Tankmates

Since I am free over the weekend,I took the opportunity to take some pictures of my fish.I think the last time I took pictures of my fish was probably 3 years ago at the time when I was crazy of arowanas.

This is a picture of my 6 footer aquarium and the 6 fish in it.There are some pebbles and few artificial plastic plants.

A close up shot of my RTG(Red Tail Golden)arowana.I like the rusty colour.

A shot of my RTG showing the missing scale and damaged fins it sustained when this arowana jump out from my aquarium during feeding.I opened the top cover of the aquarium to throw in some super worms and all the sudden this arowana jump for the food.In the process the fish had a fall from a height of about 6.5 feet.I managed to grab hold of it with a piece of cloth and returned it to the tank. This happened about 3 months ago.

Another view of my RTG from a different angle and side.

The tank mates:I have a pair of Tiger fish.Sometime the colour can change to dark.
An Oscar:This fish is the only Oscar survived in this tank.Initially I got 3 Oscars but 2 were eaten by the arowana. However this Oscar managed to survive and has grow quite big now.
This is a Birchir:I have 2 of this but of different species. They are long and look like a snake. Some notes on this type of fish:
The Polypteridae are ancient, snake-like fish whose origins date back to the time of the dinosaurs! All of the present-day Polypterids come from the freshwater rivers and lakes of Africa. They are able to breathe air via a lung-like modification to their swim bladder, and can travel over land using their strong pectoral fins. Bichir is generally peaceful and usually won't bother tank mates of the same size. This odd fish needs lots of hiding places, and a shallow tank with only a foot of water is plenty for the Bichir to be happy. A fine substrate of sand is recommended.Bichirs are carnivorous and should be fed accordingly. Many specimens will accept nothing less than live foods such as earthworms or fish.

This is another tank mates which I bought from Xian Leng Shah Alam many years old.I don't know the name of this fish.Anyone knows??

My Blood Red Arowana from Xian Leng.

Happy New Year!!This is my first posting for the year 2009.Let me introduce my arowana:a blood red arowana or high quality super red as mention in the Xian Leng certificate for this fish. This was what I did during my new year holidays other than running:transferring my blood red arowana to a new home.

*This arowana lost a scale during the transfer to a new aquarium.

I bought this fish about 4 years ago from Xian Leng Shah Alam,a subsidiary of Xian Leng Holdings Berhad which is a leading breeder and trader of the Asian Arowana. It is the first company in the fisheries sector to be listed on the then Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange(KLSE), now known as Bursa Malaysia.
The company is principally involved in the commercial captive breeding of the Asian Arowana and other ornamental fish as well as trade in related accessories.I think their business is not that good judging from their share price and the recently announced pre-tax loss.

Look at their share price!!!All the way down to become a penny share.....The last price on Friday was only RM0.30!Lucky I am crazy enough to buy their arowanas and not to buy their shares or else I will end up crying.

Four years ago was the peak period when I was crazy for fish and arowanas to the extend of spending lots of money on big fish tanks and fishes.I have 3 big tanks:one 6'x2.5'x2.5' and two 5'x2'x2'(double decker),multiple water pumps, fish medications and vitamins etc.I wonder how much I have spent on this expensive hobby to date?

Breeders like to name their arowana stocks with fancy names like chili red, blood red, super red etc just to emphasis on the degree of redness but this can be misleading as the colour may not turn out as expected. When the grown up arowana did not match the buyers expectations there are many reasons given by the breeders ranging from foods, water, the way a hobbyist take care of the fish.Very rarely or maybe never before a breeder will take the blame for the lousy outcome.Which breeder wants to say the brood is of lower quality?

This blood red arowana was my 3rd arowana I purchased from Xian Leng. The first was a Red Tail Golden Arowana and the second was a Super Red Arowana. My favourite arowana was the Super Red which died recently. You can read what happened to my Super Red at:

*Another view of my Blood Red Arowana. The main diet now is super worms.

This blood red is the lousiest arowana in my collection.First, I paid the most for this arowana expecting the best from Xian Leng premium collection. However it turn out to be a very timid fish with poor appetite. So it doesn't grow well and has unattractive body size and shape. With the help of fellow arowana friends from I tried to find a cure for these problems.I had tried putting ketapang leaves, black water, covering the tank partially, moving the tank to a less traffic area, putting in some tank mates, feeding the arowana with multivitamins and many more ideas which I can't recall.

Finally I gave up on this arowana about 2 years old ago.I decided to send this arowana to "solitary isolation" by moving it into a tank outside my house.I only feed it occasionally, change the water rarely and removed all the lightnings. There were also no tank mates for this arowana. For almost 2 years this pitiful arowana live alone in a lower tank outside my house. The upper tank in my double decker setting house my favourite super red.

*A closer look at the arowana head.

This arowana lived in darkness, the only light it gets was the sunlight which I think really benefits as it's colour became redder. This arowana was partially abandon until the dead of my favourite arowana, the super red when I decided to pay more attention to it.Finally I decided to give this arowana a second chance.I transferred it back to a proper cabinet aquarium and placed it inside my house.Hopefully this arowana won't disappoint me again with my TLC..tender loving care.

Some facts about arowanas:

Arowanas, also known as aruanas or arawanas are freshwater bony of the family Osteoglossidae, sometimes known as "bony tongues." In this family of fishes, the head is bony and the elongate body is covered by large, heavy scales, with a mosaic pattern of canals. The dorsal and the anal fins have soft rays and are long based, while the pectoral and ventral fins are small. The name 'bony tongues' is derived from a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth, the 'tongue', equipped with teeth that bite against teeth on the roof of the mouth.

Osteoglossids are carnivorous, often being specialized surface feeders. They are excellent jumpers; it has been reported that Osteoglossum species have been seen leaping more than 6 feet (almost 2 metres) from the water surface to pick off insects and birds from overhanging branches in South America, hence the nickname "water monkeys". Arowanas have been rumored to capture prey as large as low flying bats and small birds.Arowana typically grow around 3 to 4 feet, but this is only accountable in captivity.

Several species of osteoglossid exhibit extensive parental care. They build nests and protect the young after they hatch. Some species are mouth brooders, the parents holding sometimes hundreds of eggs in their mouths. The young may make several tentative trips outside the parent's mouth to investigate the surroundings before leaving permanently.

For the Chinese and those of related cultures, the dragon is a symbol of good luck and prosperity. In the eyes of the Chinese, the dragon fish has the appearance and majesty of the Chinese Dragon, especially the large scales and barbels.Arowanas are also used for feng shui to bring good luck, which I don't believe!
